The Affordable Foodie’s New Chapter

When my friend, Chef Kimberly Houston, first began dreaming up The Affordable Foodie, I had the privilege of watching it come to life with a front row seat. From the start, I loved that her mission was rooted in real-life cooking. The kind that builds confidence through simple, thoughtful recipes anyone can make.

Over time, that mission grew into something special. It’s become a welcoming space where home cooks can find inspiration, connection, and encouragement. Today, I’m honored to carry that same vision forward with recipes that blend Chef Kim’s classically trained perspective with my own self-taught, convenience-driven approach to cooking.

On this blog, you’ll find that we embrace both tradition and practicality! It’s about preserving the flavors we grew up with while finding new ways to make them fit into our busy lives. Whether you’re cooking for your family, your friends, or simply yourself, you’ll find recipes here that are doable, delicious, and deeply rewarding.

Accountant by day, Foodie by night

Hey there, my name is Cydni Mitchell Hodges. Beyond the kitchen, I serve as a financial analyst, accountant, and business strategist for creative entrepreneurs in the food industry. Since 2014, I’ve been educating bakery owners, restaurateurs, and food bloggers on how to build profitable and sustainable businesses through my online business education platform called Sweet Fest.

Although I won’t share many (if any) business tips on this site like I do on Sweet Fest, I’ve always had a burning desire to share my culinary perspective, time-saving kitchen hacks, and approachable recipes with my online community.

Unfortunately, I’ve never allowed myself the space to share that part of my life consistently on any platform. So, acquiring The Affordable Foodie blog felt like the natural next step and perfect place to share my lifelong love of food and my personal approach to making meals and dessert happen in my own home.

Culinary Influences and Background

As a third-generation Southern home cook and baker, I love honoring the recipes and traditions passed down through my family, but I also know there are only so many hours in the day. So I embrace time-saving shortcuts that let me get delicious meals on the table without spending all day in the kitchen.

My dad grew up in the Mississippi Delta in the 1950s (the youngest of eleven children) and he learned to cook by helping my grandmother in the kitchen. She never wrote down her recipes, but my dad has spent much of my life recreating them from memory and documenting them to share with future generations.

My mom, on the other hand, grew up in Jacksonville, Florida, where my great-grandmother did most of the cooking. By the time my mother had her own family, she leaned more on simple store-bought helpers, like canned pasta sauce for spaghetti or a packet of seasoning for tacos.

Those meals may not have been made from scratch, but they were still filled with love, and I carry both of these influences with me in how I cook today.

The Box Mix Mistress

While I enjoy making things from scratch, I’m not afraid to use prepared ingredients and add my own twist such as an extra dash of spice or a simple swap that makes the dish uniquely mine. I call myself a doctored box cook.

For me, it’s all about finding the balance between tradition and convenience and proving that cooking at home doesn’t have to be complicated to be rewarding.

I purchased this blog in 2024 because I believed in its goal to make home cooking approachable for anyone who might feel intimidated or unsure in the kitchen.

Originally created by Chef Kim, a classically trained chef, The Affordable Foodie began as a way to help her oldest child gain confidence in the kitchen while away at college during the pandemic.

I may not be classically trained like Chef Kim. However, I make sure to collaborate closely with her and other culinary friends from the industry to ensure the recipes here are approachable, reliable, full of flavor, and always worth your time.

Out of the Kitchen and Off the Clock

When I’m not creating (or literally dreaming) of recipes or elbows-deep in a spreadsheet, you can usually find me bundled up on the sofa binge-watching everything from nostalgic ’90s sitcoms to sci-fi and apocalyptic adventures filled with zombies and space travel.

The Affordable Foodie recipe blog is for anyone who has ever felt unsure about cooking or too busy to start everything from scratch.

My recipes are simple, approachable, and designed to build confidence one dish at a time. If I can make them, you can too!

My hope is that each recipe leaves you with something delicious on your table and a little more confidence in your own kitchen.

Shout out to Chef Kimberly Houston (aka Chef Kimihou)

The Affordable Foodie wouldn’t exist without Chef Kimberly Houston (aka Chef Kimihou). She’s a classically trained chef with a passion for teaching and sharing made home cooking feel accessible and exciting. Her dedication to helping her child (and so many others) gain confidence in the kitchen inspired thousands of readers to pick up a spoon and give cooking a try.

I’m honored to carry forward the beautiful foundation she built and to continue celebrating the recipes, values, and community that make this space so special.

Chef Kim’s Original Affordable Foodie Bio

“I’m a pastry chef, chef instructor, cookbook author, mentor, custom cookie designer, food photographer, food stylist, and all-around badass. But honestly, the number one title I have is MOM.

My oldest recently left for college and the night he called me on Facetime to help him cook his first solo meal, I wondered how many other young adults need this same support and can’t call their “chef” parent. Within 24 hours this blog was born! Im so happy you’re here. It’s my goal to make adulting a little bit easier and lot more delicious.”

Looking Ahead: The Future of The Affordable Foodie

The next chapter of The Affordable Foodie is about building community. It’s about bringing together home cooks, bakers, and busy people who love good food and good stories.

You’ll find more recipes that honor the classics while embracing modern life, along with kitchen tips, step-by-step guides, and plenty of inspiration for every season.

If you’ve ever wanted to cook more but didn’t know where to start, you’re in the right place!

My hope is that this blog feels like a friendly kitchen companion that’s full of encouragement, warmth, and recipes that just work. I can’t wait to share what’s next, and I’m so glad you’re here to be part of it.
