Easy Crock Pot BBQ Pulled Pork made with pantry staples and a simple homemade barbecue sauce. This beginner friendly slow cooker recipe is perfect for sandwiches, family dinners, and feeding a crowd.
13 to 4 pound pork shoulder, trimmed of excess fat
1teaspoonsalt
½teaspoonblack pepper
1cupketchup
3tablespoonsmaple syrup or brown sugar
¼cupapple cider vinegar
1teaspoonpaprika
½teaspoongarlic powder
½teaspoononion powder
1cupfinely chopped onion
Instructions
If using a crock pot liner, place it inside a 6 quart slow cooker for easy cleanup.
Season the pork shoulder all over with about 1 teaspoon salt and ½ teaspoon black pepper.
In a small bowl, whisk together the ketchup, apple cider vinegar, maple syrup (or brown sugar), paprika, garlic powder, and onion powder until well combined. Stir in the chopped onion.
Spoon a small amount of the barbecue sauce into the bottom of the slow cooker. Place the seasoned pork shoulder on top, then pour the remaining sauce over the meat, making sure it is well coated.
Cover and cook on HIGH for 5 to 6 hours or LOW for 8 to 9 hours, or until the pork is tender enough to shred easily with a fork.
Carefully remove the pork from the slow cooker and let it cool for 2 to 3 minutes, just until it is comfortable to handle.
Shred the pork with two forks, then return it to the slow cooker and toss it with the cooking juices until evenly coated. Serve warm.
Notes
Pork shoulder and pork butt can be used interchangeably in this recipe.
The pork is ready when it easily shreds with a fork.
Return the shredded pork to the cooking juices to keep it moist and flavorful.
For a smokier barbecue flavor, add 1 teaspoon smoked paprika or stir in ½ cup of your favorite smoky barbecue sauce after shredding.
Store leftovers with the cooking juices for the best texture when reheating.
